What is mesothelioma?

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that starts in the mesothelium, the membrane that covers and protects most internal organs. The mesothelium is composed of two layers, one surrounding the organ itself and the other forms a sac around it epithelium.

Normally there is a small amount of fluid between these two layers, which lubricates the movement of protected organs. When normal cells of the mesothelium lose control and fall rapidly, appears mesothelioma.

What is mesothelioma?

When the normal cells of the mesothelium out of control and multiply rapidly, it is called mesothelioma. The most common form of mesothelioma is mesothelioma pleural, which is generated in the lining of the lungs. Other forms are mesothelioma peritoneal, affecting the lining of the abdominal cavity, and mesothelioma pericardial, affecting the lining of the heart.

What causes mesothelioma?

What types of products generally contain asbestos?

Major risk factor

Other risk factors

Anything that increases the risk of contracting the disease is called a risk factor. Having risk factors does not mean that you will get cancer, have no risk factors does not mean that you will get cancer. People who think they are in danger should discuss with your doctor.

Many people with malignant mesothelioma have worked or lived in places where they are inhaled or swallowed asbestos. After exposure to asbestos, usually takes a long time until it manifests malignant mesothelioma. Other risk factors for malignant mesothelioma include:

 

* Living with someone who works near asbestos.
