In most cases, eventually performing a needle biopsy of the pleura or open surgical biopsy, giving a confirmed diagnosis of mesothelioma. In most cases the malignant mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a natural mineral used in various industries. A small percentage of cases have been linked to exposure to silicate mineral called zeolite or a type of radiographic contrast dye, Thorotrast, used before 1960 to make the blood vessels can be visualized on radiographs. In a few cases, no known cause of malignant mesothelioma.
People exposed to asbestos for a long time or exposed to high levels of asbestos have a higher risk of developing malignant mesothelioma, but even those exposed for a short period can develop this disease, which appears at least 15 years (generally 20 to 40 years) after exposure to asbestos.

Usually the disease is diagnosed between 50 and 70. Men are more likely than women to suffer, because it is more likely that they have worked in industries that use asbestos.

There are three main types of malignant mesothelioma: epithelial, sarcomatoid and mixed. The epithelial type is the most common.

Symptoms
About 90% of people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma have chest pain or shortness of breath as initial symptoms of this disease. These symptoms may be caused by the cancer itself, which irritates the nerve cells in nearby tissues, or by the accumulation of fluids between two layers of the pleura and chest. This fluid buildup is called pleural effusion. Patients with mesothelioma develops in the abdominal lining can have abdominal pain and swelling caused by fluid buildup in the chest cavity. Other possible symptoms include cough, fatigue and weight loss.

Diagnosis
Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history before examining. Usually medical testing is needed because the most common symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath may be due to other causes. These tests include an electrocardiogram (ECG), an abdominal radiograph or chest, depending on your symptoms and physical examination. If these tests show any abnormalities in the lungs and pleura, need to be a computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These imaging studies allow the physician to determine the size and location of any tumor in the chest or abdomen.
If you have fluid in your chest or abdomen, may be necessary to use a thin needle to remove a small sample of fluid and examine it. This procedure, called fine needle aspiration, also may be used to drain fluid and relieve the symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath. Occasionally, mesothelioma can be diagnosed only with a liquid sample, however, usually also take a tissue sample (biopsy). The tissue sample can be obtained through thoracoscopy or a procedure called video-assisted thoracoscopy (TVA) in the case of a pleural tumor, or a laparoscopic procedure known in the case of abdominal tumor. In both interventions, it inserts a tube-like instrument through a small cut that allows the physician to see the tumor and collect a tissue sample. You might also need it to perform a procedure called bronchoscopy or mediastinoscopy for the doctor to detect tumor masses in the airways caused by other tumors, or you can take tissue samples from lymph nodes.

It also conducts blood tests for scientific research that might be associated with mesothelioma, and can aid in the diagnosis and treatment response. These are known as osteopontin and mesothelin and are available as part of clinical studies.

Once your doctor is sure that you have malignant mesothelioma, the next step is to determine the level of tumor spread, which is classified into one of the four stages. This is done with imaging studies such as CT and MRI. In stage I, the tumor is confined to the pleural lining one side of the chest with no signs of having spread. If the disease returns after being successfully treated, it is called recurrent mesothelioma.

Stage I is also called localized disease, whereas stages II, III and IV are called advanced disease.

Duration
Once manifested, this cancer continues to grow and spread until it is given.

Prevention
To reduce your risk of developing malignant mesothelioma, you should avoid exposure to asbestos. Since there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, any exposure is harmful. If you live in a very old house, ask a professional expert to check exposed areas with asbestos insulation or other asbestos-damaged areas. Such areas must be removed or safely sealed by a professional. Workers who are in daily contact with asbestos materials should follow approved measures to limit exposure and avoid transport to home asbestos dust on their clothes.

Treatment
Malignant mesothelioma is difficult to treat. The cancer can spread to nearby organs easily. If the tumor has spread, it is almost impossible to remove the entire tumor by surgery. In addition, it has been difficult to examine the effectiveness of different treatments, because there are relatively few cases of malignant mesothelioma.
The main treatment options for malignant mesothelioma include surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Surgery: before considering any treatment for malignant mesothelioma, you evaluate your overall health. The tests are done to ensure that the cancer has not spread to distant sites and to evaluate the performance of your lungs and heart. Lung tests detect signs of lung injury by snuff or other diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These tests determine the level of risk they would do surgery, especially if it is necessary to remove a lung.

Surgery of malignant mesothelioma may be intended to control the long-term cancer (aggressive surgery) or relieve symptoms (palliative treatment).

Aggressive surgery: a procedure called extrapleural pneumonectomy involves removing the pleura, lung, diaphragm and pericardium. The goal of this surgery, very complicated and aggressive is to remove as much tumor as possible. Not all medical centers carry out this intervention because it is very complex and has a high risk of death within 30 days after surgery. This procedure is usually performed on younger patients with good general health with stage I disease Patients are evaluated carefully to determine their ability to tolerate surgery.

Palliative care: when malignant mesothelioma is advanced, you can resort to palliative care to relieve or control symptoms such as shortness of breath caused by fluid or tumor pressing on the lung or other organs. These treatments do not cure the disease, and are detailed below:

You can use a procedure called thoracentesis to treat fluid accumulation (pleural fluid) in pleural mesothelioma. A needle is inserted into the chest to drain the fluid, relieving breathlessness and pain. Could inject talc into the pleural space to try to stop the accumulation of fluid in that region. This treatment with talc pleurodesis with talc is called. There are other similar treatments to relieve fluid accumulation (ascites) in peritoneal mesothelioma (paracentesis).

A treatment called pleurectomy and decortication is the surgical removal of the pleura. This treatment may be performed to reduce pain caused by the tumor or to prevent fluid buildup. In case of peritoneal mesothelioma, usually the goal of surgery is to relieve symptoms.

Radiation therapy given the location of peritoneal mesothelioma is extremely difficult to use high doses of radiation sufficient to kill the tumor without damaging the organs. Low doses of radiation may help shrink the tumor, but it is unclear if this helps people to survive longer than if it were not the tumor.

Using radiation therapy after surgery has not been shown to improve survival. However, since it is highly unlikely that surgery removes all the tumor, we use radiotherapy after surgery with the hope of eliminating the remaining tumor cells. You can also use radiation therapy to relieve symptoms of mesothelioma, including chest pain.
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to treat cancer, but can not cure mesothelioma. Some chemotherapy drugs produce a partial effect in some patients. One could resort to combination chemotherapy (using more than one chemotherapy drug at the same time) in an attempt to improve patient response to medications. Some combinations were promising, and also are testing new drugs.

Like radiation therapy, may be given chemotherapy after surgery in an attempt to fight cancer cells that could not be removed.
Mesothelioma Treatment in Stage I (localized): if you are willing to undergo aggressive treatment and is healthy enough to resort to surgery, some centers may perform a extrapleural pneumonectomy. Another surgical option is pleurectomy and decortication, which is sometimes performed to relieve some symptoms of mesothelioma. Both procedures can be followed by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Less than 5% of patients with malignant mesothelioma are candidates for aggressive surgery.

Mesothelioma stages II, III and IV (advanced): pleurectomy and decortication may be performed to relieve symptoms in pleural mesothelioma. It could be another intervention such as thoracentesis to remove fluid (pleural effusion) and prevent future accumulation. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy could be administered to relieve symptoms.

Recurrent malignant mesothelioma: there is no standard treatment for recurrent mesothelioma. Generally, these treatments are considered which are not used the first time that the disease treated.
Clinical treatments and future treatments: are being evaluated in clinical trials for new treatments for malignant mesothelioma, as well as possible preventive measures, it was noted that future treatments appear promising. Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new treatments. There is no guarantee that a new treatment to work, they also present some risks. However, it begins with a clinical trial unless the researchers believe that a particular treatment may be worthwhile.
The following are some of the treatments under evaluation for malignant mesothelioma:

Combination chemotherapy: have tried different combinations of chemotherapy drugs and have obtained different results.
Intracavitary chemotherapy: researchers look for ways of putting chemotherapy drugs directly into the peritoneal and pleural spaces. Since the drug placed directly within these cavities, can be given much higher doses without causing serious side effects to patients. Some studies have shown this therapy to control liquid spills reduce tumor size.

Brachytherapy (intracavitary radiation therapy) by this treatment, a radioactive substance is placed directly into the peritoneal or pleural space.

Multimodal therapy: This therapy involves the combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Gene therapy: by this treatment, the tumor is placed within a genetically engineered virus. The virus infects cancer cells and makes it vulnerable to anticancer drugs.

Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy is called the processes which stimulate the body’s immune system to fight cancer cells.
